Come see this instrument and all of the others that have been spotlighted on the Wall of News in the Dusty Strings Exhibit at Skull and Roses this year.

Step into the PHIL ZONE with an intimate view of Phil’s legendary mid-70’s bass that set the standards of audio performance.  This instrument will be featured in our DUSTY STRINGS exhibit and played by musicians onstage at SKULL & ROSES 2022.

While the Dead’s overall sound staff, from Owsley to Healy to the band’s crew to the folks at Alembic, were building the wall of sound, Rick Turner, an Alembic luthier, was building a bass for Phil Lesh that was essentially a component of the wall.  And just as the Wall established standards for future music p.a. systems, “Mission Control” (also known as “Osiris” and “the Omega”) would be the seed for what would be called “boutique” instruments.  Jerry Garcia’s “Wolf,” built by Doug Irwin at roughly the same time, also used a similar type of construction.

“Mission Control” would help the Dead play through a lunar eclipse in Egypt, lose Winterland, and (among 250 shows), help the band play a modest little show at Barton Hall, Cornell University, that earned them some reputation.

It would take a serious woodworker to even have a clue as to how many different exotic woods make it up, but for those of us who can just about identify symbols, get up close and you’ll see mother-of-pearl lightning bolts striking an abalone serpent eating its own tail; a crescent moon, kissing fish (Lesh is a Pisces) rendered in abalone, a dark star, a lizard, a bat, a Saturn, and …but of course! … the symbol for infinity.

It’s a musical instrument as an electronic sculpture…and you will want to see it in the Skull and Roses Guitar Museum, to the left of the stage (ticket holders get the front door – the musicians will be drooling over the instruments from the back door!
